In the real world, the challenge lies in clearing a way to the existing stack drain. Your approach varies depends whether you are below grade, in the basement, on the ground floor or higher. Preparation 1 Score the sides of an inch wide trench leading from the toilet drain to the main stack with a cement saw with a masonry blade, if you are hooking up a toilet drain in the basement. Remove the concrete floor between the scored lines with a maul or jackhammer, depending on how hard the concrete is. You may skip this step if you have direct access to the work area from below, in cases of new construction or a situation involving on a ground-level bathroom with an unfinished basement ceiling directly underneath. Put on heavy rubber gloves.

The supply line should terminate with a shut-off valve either soldered to the supply pipe or attached with a compression fitting. Open any faucets connected to the pipe and leave them open while you connect the toilet line to it. Place a bucket under the pipe to catch water. After you've finished the cut, wait for all the water to drain out of the pipes before continuing. Be sure the tee outlet is facing in the direction of the toilet. The line should terminate next to a wall stud and about 2 inches beyond the surface of the wall just under the tank. Fit the line together, spreading soldering flux on the pipe and inside the fitting at each joint, and secure the end to the wall stud with a pipe clamp.
